Table 5a - Minority Representation
The representation of U.S. racial and ethnic minorities as a
percentage of all predoctoral trainees has almost doubled since the 1986 and
1991 surveys. However, a comparable increase in their representation among
postdoctoral trainees has not yet occurred. Similarly, while minority
representation at the faculty level appears to have increased gradually over the
years, it still remains relatively low.

Table 5b - Minority Distribution
Among the U.S. racial and ethnic minority population, Asian-Americans represented the largest group of predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, and tenure-stream faculty, in the neural sciences. Hispanic-Americans were less numerous in all three categories, while African-Americans were even fewer in number, and Native Americans were still fewer (data not obtained in 1986 survey).
