2003 Education Award in Neuroscience

Martinez, Jr. and Dr. James Townsel
At the ANDP annual
fall meeting on November 8, 2003, the 2003 ANDP Education Awards
were presented to Dr. Joe
Martinez, Jr. (University of Texas at San Antonio), and Dr.
James Townsel (Meharry Medical College) for their creative
and energetic efforts to put careers in neuroscience in the
reach of students from a wide diversity of backgrounds.
Individually and as Co-Directors of the Summer Program in
Neuroscience, Ethics, and Survival (SPINES) at the Marine
Biological Laboratory, Drs. Martinez and Townsel have put
boundless energy into developing innovative mechanisms for
fostering success.
Dr. Martinez is Associate Vice Provost for Research, Program
Director of the Cajal Neuroscience Research Center, and Ewing
Halsell Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Texas at

Dr. James Townsel serves as Associate Vice President for
Research, Director of the Meharry/Vanderbilt Alliance in
Neuroscience Training Program, and Director of the Research
Centers in Minority Institutions Program at Meharry Medical
