Rachelle Toman is a
graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience (IPN)
at Georgetown University Medical Center.
She works with Dr. Sarah Spiegel of the Department of
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology examining the role of sphingolipids
and their metabolites in the processes of neurite extension and
retraction. She received a B.S. in both Biology and Psychology from
Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., where she began her research training
as a Howard Hughes Scholar in the laboratories of Dr. Michael Noonan and
Dr. Pamela Lein.
Rachelle brought a
continuing interest in program administration and student advocacy with
her to Georgetown. She not only serves as the general student liaison for the
IPN, holding regular meetings with both pre-thesis and thesis students
in the program, she also serves as the student representative to the IPN
Curriculum Committee. Additionally,
Rachelle is the elected student representative to the Academic Planning
Committee, where she advocates for entire graduate student body in
issues surrounding the current restructuring of
the Medical Center.
