The HFSP provides both Research Grants for collaborative projects among labs of different countries (3 years) and Fellowships (short-term or long-term) for Postdoctoral work in a different country. The principal investigator or fellow must be from (or going to) a member country which includes 16 European countries, the U.S., Canada and Japan.

The AvHF has five separate programs supporting work in Germany or overseas. They are the Humbolt Research Fellowships for foreign scientists under age 40 to work in Germany(1 yr), Humbolt Research Awards for internationally recognized senior scientists (associate professor and full professor or equivalent) to work in Germany, Feodor-Lynen Research Fellowships for German post-docs under the age of 38 to work abroad, and two prestigious awards, the Max Planck Research Award for foreign and German scholars to foster cooperative research projects, and the Bundeskanzler Scholarships to leading U.S. scholars under 35 to carry out research in Germany.

The JSPS supports three programs for scientists interested in working in Japan. The Invitational Fellowship Program supports senior scientists (more than 6 years post-doc experience) for short or long-term periods (from 2 months to10 months); the Postdoctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers provides up to 2 years of support for those with less than 6 years post-doc experience; and the Postdoctoral Fellowship for American Researchers which provides 1 year of funding for American graduates with less than 10 years post-doc experience. This award can be combined with the previous one for a total of three years. Application is done through the Fogarty International Center (NIH) or NSF.

The Cobase Program, funded by the NSF, offers two types of grants to American scientists who want to establish research partnerships with colleagues from Central/Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States. Short-term Project Development Grants are for visits of up to two weeks (up to $2,750) to prepare a collaborative proposal for submission to NSF. Long-term Grants are for collaborative periods of one to six months (up to $15,300).
