2007 Spring Meeting Announcement

Please mark your calendars now for the ANDP Spring Meeting in Bethesda, MD on May 5 and May 6, 2007.  This is the most important annual meeting for those of us involved in graduate and postdoctoral education in the neurosciences.  Your participation is important to the group's mission and is likely to have direct impact on how you administer your program.

An exciting program is planned for this meeting focusing on several new and important topics.  Panel sessions and speakers directly relevant to graduate and postdoctoral training are on tap including:  Funding Graduate Education in a Time of Declining NIH Resources; The Role of Training Grants and Fellowships at NIMH; Where Graduate Education Fits at ANDP and SFN; Mentoring the Mentors; and Interactive Neuroscience Tools.  And, of course, you'll get to meet representatives from new member programs and talk with many colleagues who share your passion about graduate training!

You will be receiving an agenda and registration forms in the mail in the next few weeks, and we encourage you to register on-line at the ANDP website.  The deadline to register to attend the Spring Meeting is April 16.  Registration will be $225 for the meeting, including the banquet on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.  So don't delay to register for this important event now.

The meeting will be held at the Bethesda Hyatt, conveniently available from National Airport and other DC locations on the metro red line.  The deadline to reserve your room at the Hyatt at the ANDP rate is April 7.  However, the number of rooms available at this rate are limited and the hotel is very popular and tends to fill up quickly.  Contact the Hyatt at (301) 657-1234 to make your reservation as soon as possible.  Watch for the forms and plan to spend a lively and enlightening weekend.  Feel free to pass this information on to an interested colleague.

2006 Fall Meeting Summary

The 2006 ANDP Fall Meeting was held on October 14 in Atlanta, Georgia, during the Society for Neuroscience meeting. Approximately 50 ANDP member representatives attended. The ANDP welcomed new member programs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Brigham Young University. In addition, the following new officers began terms of service: Alison Hall, President; Michael Lehman, President-elect; David Riddle, Secretary; Daniel Tranel, Councilor; Barry Kaplan, Councilor. During the SfN meeting the ANDP also sponsored two activities for trainees, the ANDP Forum on Professional Development and the Student Hospitality Suite.

The highlight of the 2006 ANDP Fall Meeting was the presentation of the ANDP Education Award to Dr. Donald Kennedy in recognition of his contributions to neuroscience education and training. With this award, ANDP honored Dr. Kennedy’s positive influence on students through his teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in neuroscience, his important and influential role as the mentor and trainer of a large cadre of successful neuroscientists, and his many contributions to public education and awareness of science through his work at the FDA and as Editor-in-Chief of Science. Dr. Kennedy was introduced by three former students, Dr. Donald Edwards, Dr. Ron Calabrese, and Dr. Brian Mulloney.

2005 ANDP Survey Results Available

The ANDP Survey of Neuroscience Programs has become the signature activity of ANDP. Now conducted bi-annually, the ANDP Survey provides the most current data available on the characteristics and demographics of neuroscience programs in the US and Canada. In addition, comparisons with previous surveys show the latest trends in neuroscience education and research training. The Report of the 2005 ANDP Survey, prepared by Dr. Ed Stricker, are now available on the ANDP website (provide link). We hope you will find the survey results informative and of use within your program.
