Fall Meeting 2003 to be Held in New Orleans, November 8th

The ANDP Annual Fall Meeting, for representatives of neuroscience departments and programs, is held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.   This year the meeting, which includes introduction of the new officers of the ANDP, presentation of the 2003 Education in Neuroscience Award, short talks by the awardee(s), and a social reception, will be held on Saturday, November 8th  from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Registration is required.  For more information contact the ANDP office at andp@andp.org

The ANDP has also organized and will operate a Student Hospitality Suite with the Society for Neuroscience (SFN). The suite will be located in the Morial Convention Center, Room 387 and will be open Saturday, November 8 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sunday through Wednesday,  November 9-12 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The room can be used for relaxing, reading, meeting colleagues, and holding special interest group discussions.  Students will be on-hand to answer questions concerning the meeting.

In addition, the sixth annual ANDP Forum will be held on Monday, November 10th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  This year's forum is entitled, "Getting the Job You Want and Keeping It."  The focus is on that critical time in almost every neuroscientist's career when the postdoc is ending and the job search is beginning.  What should you be doing to prepare yourself?  What can you expect on your job interview?  How should you negotiate for salary, space, start-up money?  And after you get the job, what should you be doing to hit the ground running and what pitfalls should you avoid?  These and related issues will be discussed by panelists from academia and industry, and audience participation is strongly encouraged.  The goal is to help graduate students and posdocs become aware of some critical steps that will smooth the transition to research independence.

2003 ANDP Survey of Neuroscience Programs

On a regular basis the ANDP conducts surveys of graduate and postdoctoral Neuroscience programs.  The 2003 questionnaire has been distributed to members.  You are urged to participate in this important survey.

The report based on the results of the 2001 ANDP Survey is now available. This report contains information about graduate and postdoctoral training in neuroscience, and compares the findings with the results obtained from previous ANDP surveys conducted in 1986, 1991, and 1998, and . The report also contains, for the first time, information about undergraduate training in neuroscience. Comments about this report would be appreciated, including any suggestions for how to make the present report more clear and useful, and what sort of information might be usefully collected in future surveys. Please send such remarks to Ed Stricker at the following address:  stricker@bns.pitt.edu.  Note that the report is available in a web-based version for ease of navigaton and has also been provided as a pdf file for printing.
