"Graduate Neuroscience Training in a Combined Medical
School/Liberal Arts
Environment" Michael J. Friedlander (University of
Alabama, Birmingham) moderated a panel discussion of how
graduate training in Neuroscience is organized in complex
university settings. The other panelists were John Donoghue
(Brown University), Richard T. Robertson (University of
California, Irvine), and Edward M. Stricker (University of
Pittsburgh).
3:15 p.m. "Graduate Student Training in Cognitive and
Computational Neuroscience" James L.McClelland (Center
for Neural Basis of Cognition, Carnegie Mellon University and
University of Pittsburgh) moderated a panel discussion of
training in cognitive and computational neuroscience, and its
integration with complementary course-work and research training
in cellular, molecular, and systems neurobiology. The other
panelists were William B. Kristan, Jr. (University of
California, San Diego) and Steven E. Petersen (Washington
University, St. Louis).

"Neuroscience as a Contact Sport: The Argument for
Laboratory Training at the Undergraduate Level" Karen
Parfitt (Pomona College), President of Faculty for Undergraduate
Neuroscience (FUN), moderated a discussion of laboratory
research training for undergraduate Neuroscience students.
Panelists included Terry S. Woodin (Program Director, Division
of Undergraduate Education, National Science Foundation) and
Ronald R. Hoy (Cornell University).
10:45 a.m. "Addressing the Nation's Changing Needs for
Biomedical and Behavioral
Scientists" Edward Stricker (University of Pittsburgh)
moderated a discussion of last year's report by the National
Research Council, published by the National Academy Press. The
featured speaker was Marvin Cassman (Director, National
Institute of General Medical Sciences).
1:00 p.m. "Qualifiers to Qualifications: Trainees'
Concerns on Graduate Training Issues"
Alison Hall (Case Western Reserve University) will moderate a
discussion of graduate training in preparation for careers in
Neuroscience. The featured speaker was Bruce Alberts (president
of the National Academy of Sciences and chair of the National
Research Council); the ANDP Fellows provided the perspective of
trainees.
3:15 p.m. "Neuroscience Education and the Role of the
ANDP in the New Decade" Barbara Talamo (Tufts
University), Past President of the ANDP, moderated a panel
discussion on graduate neuroscience training. The panelists
included former Past Presidents Thomas O. Fox (Harvard
University), Robert E. Fellows (University of Iowa), and James
S. King, President -Elect of the ANDP (Ohio State University.
