SPRING MEETING SUMMARY

The ANDP held the Spring
Meeting of the Association of Neuroscience Departments and Programs, in
Bethesda, Maryland. on May 4-5, 2002. Speakers on the agenda
included:
- Chris Golde,
who introduced to the membership a program funded by the
Carnegie Foundation on Doctorate Education. Neuroscience has been
chosen by the Carnegie Foundation as one of the areas of doctoral
education to be studied.
- Charlotte Kuh, from the
National Research Council, who discussed the upcoming survey and
ranking of graduate programs in the biological sciences.
- Freeman Hrabowski, President of
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, shared his experiences
in developing a successful program in science education for
underrepresented minorities.
- Frankie Trull, President of the
Foundation for Biomedical Research, who provided an update on
national activities related to the use of animals in biomedical
research.
In addition, sessions were scheduled on
curricular issues relevant to both graduate and undergraduate education
and representatives from the NIH and NSF provided an update on the
support of doctoral education by the federal government.
