Training Fellows Program

The Association of Neuroscience Departments and Programs (ANDP) established a new initiative for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows called the ANDP Training Fellows program. The program was designed for students interested in developing leadership skills in neuroscience training and education. Fellows were exposed to policy issues related to graduate and postgraduate education, research training, and other matters that command the attention of administrative leaders at universities, medical schools, scientific associations, and federal agencies. One goal of the program was to introduce the student to current issues in academia that lead to the formation of policy. Another goal was to provide informal training for the student in decision-making skills. A third goal was to allow the student to learn more about what is required of deans, department chairpersons, and program directors to be effective leaders of their academic units. A final goal was for the Association to gain student-based insight into issues of importance to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. 

Fellows attended the Fall ANDP meeting at the Society for Neuroscience meeting, the interim Executive Committee meetings of the ANDP for workshop planning, and participated as panelists or speakers at the Spring ANDP meeting. Previous ANDP fellow presentations address important training issues. This program was partially supported by royalties from the Harcourt Brace/Academic Press textbook Fundamental Neuroscience.
