Program Description:  Academic and scientific leaders at GW, recognizing the need for highly trained neuroscientists and development of therapies for a wide range of disorders affecting the nervous system, have developed a comprehensive doctoral program in neuroscience through the Columbian School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Nowhere are interdisciplinary interactions more promising than here, where teams of investigators from various disciplines bring together unique skills and scientific methods to attack major problems in a full-scale effort to battle brain disorders.

Instructors include regular faculty members at the GW's School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Columbian School of Arts and Sciences, as well as distinguished neuroscience researchers from the National Institutes of Health, Holland Laboratory of American Red Cross and Children's National Medical Center. The program curriculum includes fundamentals in biochemistry, pharmacology, and the neurosciences, including neurological disease. Journal review sessions, special-interest discussion groups, and seminar offered by distinguished neuroscientists, faculty and students provide in-depth study of advanced topics. An annual research symposium introduces the latest research findings to stimulate interactions across the neuroscience disciplines. Internships in neuroscience research laboratories help students select an area of specialty.

Extensive research facilities are available in well-equipped faculty laboratories housed in GW's Medical Center and Psychology Department, in the Neuroscience Center at the Children's Research Institute, and in selected laboratories at Holland Laboratory of the American Red Cross at NIH. The University's Gelman Library and Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, the National Library of Medicine, and numerous government agency and other university libraries are available to students. Innovative research collaborations are available with the laboratories of NIH investigators affiliated with the program, and students are invited to attend the numerous research seminars and colloquia conducted throughout the area.
