Program Description: The Program
in Neuroscience at Washington University is a broadly based, interdisciplinary
program that provides flexible, in-depth training to best suit the educational
needs and the scientific interests of its students. The 69 faculty who
participate in the Program hold appointments in one of many departments in the
Medical School or in the School of Arts and Sciences. Because of its size and
diversity, the Program can offer research experience in a wide range of modern
neurobiology, including cellular, molecular, developmental, systems, clinical,
and computational neuroscience. Formal coursework provides broad but thorough
coverage of modern neuroscience, acquaints students with the original literature
and teaches effective scientific writing and speaking skills. Rotations through
several faculty laboratories in the first year of graduate school acquaint
students with the details of specific research topics and experimental
approaches.
The Program supports several active seminar series and an annual neuroscience
retreat. All students are required to satisfactorily complete a preliminary
examination, present a formal written thesis proposal and write and orally
defend an original thesis.
