Program Description:  UAB's graduate program in behavioral neuroscience is based on the belief that concomitant training in behavioral research and in cellular and molecular approaches to neuroscience is necessary to fully understand complex processes such as learning, memory and perception. Cellular neurobiology, electrophysiology and molecular neurobiology provide powerful tools to analyze neural processes, while behavioral and neuroimaging studies delineate function. The Behavioral Neuroscience Program seeks to train students who appreciate the reciprocal interaction between neuroscience and behavioral science and whose theoretical perspectives and research activities reflect this integration.

Neuroscience research at UAB occurs within an explicitly interdepartmental and interdisciplinary context, providing a rich experience for graduate students. Faculty in the Behavioral Neuroscience Program hold primary appointments in the departments of Psychology, Neurobiology, Physiological Optics, Biocommunication, Cell Biology, Physiology and Psychiatry. This breadth of perspective is reflected both in the course offerings and the research undertaken by Behavioral Neuroscience students. Research topics pursued by Behavioral Neuroscience students include the neurobiology of Alzheimer's disease, neural computation of direction selectivity in the retina, visual changes during aging, circadian rhythms in the retina, and the neural basis of nicotine addiction.

The goal of the Behavioral Neuroscience Graduate Program is for each student to (a) obtain a firm academic foundation in psychology and neuroscience and (b) engage in programmatic research in some aspect of Behavioral Neuroscience under the mentorship of one of the Behavioral Neuroscience faculty. In the spirit, student study core areas of psychology, including statistics and experimental design and neurobiology of learning and memory. In addition, courses in integrative neuroscience and in cellular and molecular neuroscience are required. Most students take additional courses to provide background in their area of research specialization. As part of their training, students will gain experience in writing research proposals and making public presentations, important skills for professional success.
