Program Description:  The program is interdisciplinary, with a faculty of 49, offering programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy/Master of Science degree in pharmacology and toxicology. The Master of Science degree also offers a special concentration in Perfusion Science or Industrial Hygiene. Faculty members have research interests in carcinogenesis/cancer chemotherapy, cardiovascular pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, endocrine pharmacology, environmental and biochemical toxicology, immunopharmacology, molecular/biochemical pharmacology, molecular toxicology, neuropharmacology, and pharmacokinetics. During the first year of graduate study, PhD students complete three research laboratory rotations. These rotations introduce the student in research, both in terms of specific questions and techniques and to more general aspects of research strategies and problem solving. In the second year, students select a faculty advisor and laboratory for their research project. First-year coursework is usually physiology, biostatistics and pharmacology or advanced courses in pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry and related areas. By the end of the second year, coursework in the major or minor should be largely completed. Advancement to candidacy for MS students is the completion of twelve (12) units of coursework. Students advance to PhD candidacy by completion of written and oral comprehensive examination. Successful performance permits the student to complete the PhD dissertation research. The PhD degree is awarded upon successful completion of a research project that culminates in an original and significant contribution. Completion of the PhD degree usually takes 4-5 years and the MS degree usually takes 2-3 years.

Admission Requirements:  Admission requires the completion of a bachelor's degree with a major in chemistry, biology, pharmacy or other related science. Minimal prerequisites include one year each of biology, organic chemistry, and physics and coursework in mathematics through integral calculus. Applicants must submit general GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose. Graduate study programs are individually planned after consideration of the student's preparation and professional objectives. A disseratation/thesis is required.
