Program Description:  The Department of Psychobiology at UCI offers graduate training leading to the Ph.D. Faculty and students in Neurobiology and Behavior have a common goal:  to understand how the brain produces behavior that adapts to a changing environment.  Progress toward this goal requires a command of both a research specialty and its broader context.  Our graduate training gives students a broad foundation in neuroscience, technical proficiency in an area of interest, and an understanding of the fundamentals and subtleties of that area so that they can address intellectual and technical issues with finesse.  Since we consider teaching to be an integral part of a graduate education, our students also acquire experience in teaching.  For full description, see http://neurobiology.uci.edu

Annual Tuition and Fees:  The Department pays all registration fees and, for out-of-state U.S. residents, also covers nonresident tuition for the first year, until the student can qualify for California residency.

Approximate Cost of Living Per:  on-campus $13,370; off-campus $16,915

Housing Availability and Costs Per Year:  The university maintains 862 furnished and unfurnished one, two and three bedroom apartments for married students and graduate students at Verano place; 204 unfurnished studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments at Palo Verde; and 60 single rooms at Quenya residence hall. Recreational facilities and coin-operated laundry facilities are provided at all complexes; Verano Place also includes a preschool and children's play yards. The cost of housing ranges from $2,516 to $4,496 per academic year. This includes shared units, as well as furnished and unfurnished units. The residence hall (which includes meals) runs $6,511/year.

There is heavy demand for student housing. Applications should be submitted at least eight months before the student wishes to move in. Students may apply for housing before they are admitted and are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible. A $20 non-refundable application fee must accompany the application.

Day-Care Facilities Availability and Costs Per Month:  There are five day-care centers on Campus with full and part-time programs for children 3 months to 12 years. Three of these centers offer priority enrollment and a tuition subsidy for low-income student families. A kindergarten program is offered at the Early Childhood Education Center.

Stipend/Assistantships and Financial Assistance:  All students receive a stipend to cover living expenses.  For 2003-2004, the stipend is $23, 500 per year.  UCI provides health and dental insurance for graduate students.
