Program Description: The Neuroscience and Behavior Program at the doctoral level involves four faculty members of the Biology Department whose research interests are: pattern generation by a simple neuronal system (A. Berlind), sensory information processing in electroreceptive fishes (D. Bodznick), development of vocal control brain circuitry and song learning in birds (J. Kirn), and the development of the mammalian visual cortex (J. Naegele). Graduate students are able to formulate individual academic and research programs emphasizing cellular or systems neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, molecular and cellular studies in developmental neurobiology, and neuroethology. Students gain wider exposure in neuroscience through the frequent seminars of visiting neuroscientists. The Department also provides support for students to take a neuroscience course in the summer program of the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole.
The Psychology Department, through its five neuroscience faculty, provides training in behavioral neuroscience in the context of its general masters degree program. The emphasis is on intensive research experience with course selection tailored to fit individual needs. Research areas are: language development and hemispheric specialization (C. Best), perception (C. Luo), genetic and environmental influences on cognitive development (S. Petrill), memory (J. Seamon), and neural initiation of locomotion (H. Sinnamon).
