Program Description: The aim of the research and training program in Complex Systems and Brain Sciences at Florida Atlantic University is to blend emerging concepts and models of complex systems (e.g. in nonlinear dynamics and so-called "chaos theory") with specific experimental models systems in the behavioral and brain sciences.
Graduate training is research oriented and will consist of a core curriculum in neuroscience (including neural networks and cognitive science), the mathematical concepts and tools of nonlinear dynamics, and computational science. Students will earn a Ph.D. degree through the Center for Complex Systems. Post-docotoral candidates should have a strong interdisciplinary interest. Competitive stipends for pre and post-docotoral fellows are available through a training grant funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, as well as individual faculty research grants.
Active areas of research include: sensorimotor control and coordination; brainstem neurophysiology; neural growth, development and regeneration; speech production and perception; modeling ion channels; fractal analysis of biological systems; neurolinguistics; learning and memory; visual psychophysics; neurochemistry; neuropsychopharmacology; human brain imaging and event related potentials; mathematics of complex systems; nonlinear dynamics; neural networks and robotics.
Faculty from the Departments of Psychology, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering are involved in the program, which is offered through the Center for Complex Systems.
Florida Atlantic University is a member of the State University System of Florida and is located in Boca Raton, less than a mile from the Atlantic Ocean between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.
