Program Description: The Molecular Medicine PhD Program offers predoctoral training in molecular and cellular neurobiology. The focus of the Program is to help students acquire the analytical skill and techniques needed for cutting-edge research on molecular mechanisms involved in neural development and neurological diseases. Areas of research include developmental neurobiology, biological signaling, endocrines and neuroprotection, stem cell biology and neural cell transplantation, neuroregeneration, genetics of neurodegenerative disorders, strokes, mechanisms of cell death, and neuro-oncology. Predoctoral trainees are required to take the Core Course in Biomedical Sciences, which includes current topics in biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology and neurobiology, the course on Molecular Medicine, which emphasizes the translation of molecular biology to clinical problems, and two advance level courses on cell signaling, neurobiology, gene regulation, molecular immunology and neuropharmacology. Students have access to state-of-the art core research facilities, including the Confocal Microscopy and Cell Imagin Core, Transgenic Mouse/Stem Cell Core, Transgenic Zebrafish Core, Flow Cytometry Core, EM Core, Histopathology Core, Protein and Cell Production Core, Molecular Biology and Genomics Core, and Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core.
