Program Description:  The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics offers graduate study leading to the Ph.D. degree and postdoctoral training in molecular, cellular and developmental neurobiology. Major goals of the Ph.D. program are to provide fundamental knowledge of neurophysiological processes and to impact modern research skills. Principal areas of research have an underlying theme of understanding mechanisms of signal transduction involved in regulation of function and development.

The graduate program requires four or more years for completion. After completing courses and lab rotations in the first two years, students spend full time on thesis research. The Department, located in the Carver College of Medicine, maintains close ties with both basic science and clinical departments, as well as with related departments and programs throughout the University.

The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics occupies two floors of the Bowen Science Building, adjacent to the Departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Pharmacology. In addition to specialized equipment in faculty research laboratories, the department provides multi-investigator facilities for cell culture, molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy and imaging, histology, laser densitometry, photography, and isotope analysis. Adjacent to the Bowen Science Building, the Eckstein Medical Research Building provides interdisciplinary groups of faculty scientists with laboratories and core facilities including image analysis, hybridoma production, eletron microscopy, fluorescence activated cell sorting, GC/MS, and DNA analysis.

Admission Requirements:

Undergraduate major in one of the biological sciences, chemical, physical, mathematical, or engineering sciences.
-One or more years of course work in biology, physics, biochemistry, and calculus is desirable
-Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
