Program Description:  The Doctoral Program in Neuroscience at the University of Mississippi was established in 2006 as an interdisciplinary collaboration of 25 core faculty members from 9 Departments at UMC spanning both basic and clinical programs. It has rapidly grown to 40 faculty spanning 15 Departments at UMC. Its mission is to provide comprehensive training in modern neuroscience with an emphasis on clinically relevant research. It is jointly supported by the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, the Department of Psychiatry, the Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience (funded by NCRR) and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Research funding at UMC is very strong with some 25 neuroscience investigators receiving over $5 million per year in NIH funding.

All students complete 55 quarter hours of lecture, seminars and tutorials in neuroscience including, Cellular and Molecular, Biochemical, Physiological, Developmental, Anatomical and Systems and Behavioral Neuroscience. In addition, students complete courses in Experimental Design and Analysis, Responsible Conduct of Research and Professional Survival Skills. During their first two years, students rotate through three laboratories and complete elective coursework specific to their dissertation interests.

Although the formal program is relatively young, our faculty has trained over 20 graduate neuroscientists in the past 10 years. Our students place well on graduation, going on to strong programs at Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, The Scripps Institute and the National Institutes of Health.

Admission Requirements:
Admission to the Doctoral Program in Neuroscience requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, a superior academic record, and satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination. For those applicants whose native language is other than English, satisfactory performance on the TOEFL is also required. A background in one of the basic sciences (e.g. pharmacy, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, psychology, physics) or mathematics is recommended, but outstanding students in other disciplines will be considered.
