Program Description: The Biopsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience (BBN) graduate study area of the Department of Psychology on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University offers a training program which leads to the Ph.D. The training faculty are largely affiliated with this department, although participants also include faculty from Physiology & Neurobiology, Alcohol Studies, and Nutritional Sciences. The program is designed to train predoctoral students to become behavioral neuroscientists who will contribute to our understanding of the basic psychological processes, including both adaptive and maladaptive behaviors that are relevant to people. Research specializations include: learning and memory; psychopharmacology of drug and alcohol abuse; animal models of anxiety, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, and age-related dementias. The primary components of the training program are course work and laboratory research. The curriculum includes core courses in behavioral neuroscience, seminars, and electives that can be drawn from a large array of Rutgers University offerings. The research experiences begin at the onset of training. The time devoted to research increases, and to course work decreases, as the student progresses through the program.. These components are supplemented by a BBN Colloquium Series featuring guest speakers from other universities, an intra-BBN series organized by the students with a varied format, and a rich variety of colloquia and special lectures at nearby locations. The progress of the trainees is monitored by the mentor and other participating faculty through the student's Advisory, Master's, Qualifying, and Doctoral Dissertation Committees. The time to complete doctoral work in our program is about 5.5 years. Predoctoral trainees ideally have a strong background in relevant science courses, and preferably, some research experience.
