Program Description:  A specialized subprogram of the CUNY Psychology Doctoral Program, Biopsychology integrates the concepts and methods of behavioral neuroscience, behavioral ecology, ethology, experimental psychology, neurobiology and cognitive science to provide a unique perspective on the development, evolution and causal control of human and animal behavior. Through its links to CUNY Doctoral Programs in Biology and to the American Museum of Natural History it provides interdisciplinary training in Neuroscience and Animal Behavior, and resources for laboratory and field research with a variety of invertebrate and vertebrate species, including insects, reptiles, amphibia, fish, birds, small mammals, and humans. A series of laboratory rotations during the first two years facilitates selection of a Dissertation sponsor and interdisciplinary dissertations are encouraged. Faculty research interests include neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, conditioning and learning, visual processes, memory, psycholinguistics, neuroendocrine mechanisms in behavior, bird song, animal orientation and communication, neural control of eating and drinking, motor control mechanisms, and cellular and systems development in animal and humans. Tuition is moderate and teaching assistantships and tuition waivers are available.
