Program Description: The group in Biological Sciences (Main Campus) has strong interests in synaptic plasticity, visual system develoment, growth cone motility and guidance, video imaging and reconstruction, and the neural basis of behavior. Students receive training in and interact extensively with other areas of modern biology represented within the department (molecular, cellular and ecology/evolution). The group in Biomedical Sciences (Wadsworth Labs) has stronger interests in neurological disorders (including genetics), neurotoxicity and neuroplasticity, and neurotransmitter regulation. The members of the two groups share an interest in understanding brain function at the cellular and molecular levels. There is extensive interaction among the faculty and students of the two programs, including several colalborations and an active local Neuroscience chapter. First year students in each program enroll in a core of graduate courses in modern cell-molecular biology and biochemistry, a graduate student seminar in neurobiology and a formal series of lab rotations in neuroscience. Second year students enroll in specialty courses and seminars in neuroscience and begin their thesis research.
Admission Requirements:
There are no absolute minimums for scores, but a good rule of thumb is a GPA of at least 3.0 and GRE socres of at least the 60th percentile. Both departments follow a policy of rolling admissions, so there are no absolute deadlines for consideration, but to be considered for University fellowships, applications should be completed by January 15. Application fee: $50.
How, and Where to Apply: Application materials may be obtained from the addresses given above, and should be submitted to:
