Program Description: The graduate program in Neural and Behavioral Sciences at SUNY-Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn is an interdepartmental program involving seven departments and 42 faculty. At present, the program includes twenty-one students. Six of these are M.D./Ph.D. students.
The required courses are Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Neuroscience. Additional courses are available in electrophysiology, second messenger systems, cell physiology, pharmacology, the limbic system, development, anatomical methods, primate behavior, and courses in other graduate programs. All students have a tuition waver and stipends of up to $20,500.
The largest concentrations of research are in hippocampus/cortex, mathematical modeling and development. Hippocampal/cortical studies involve studies in molecular biology, cell and synaptic biology, (especially protein kinase C, inhibitory mechanisms, and intracellular calcium), in vivo generation of slow waves, spatial behavior in behaving animals, and mathematical modeling. Mechanisms of epilepsy and anoxic damage are studied along with normal states. Many collaborations exist between these faculty. Developmen studies involve growth factors, function of autonomic nervous system, amphibian visual system, neurotransmitter phenotype specificity, hypothalamus, Schwann cells in periphery, and the effect of cocaine. Other work is on chemical senses, autonomic nervous system, primate behavior, reptilian behavior, endorphins, genetics of alcoholism, protein kinase C, glycoproteins and proteoglycans, evoked potentials, and the nicotinic receptor.
