Program Description: The Department of Neuroscience provides an interdisciplinary atmosphere for examining aspects of neuroscience ranging from sub-cellular to cognitive processes. Principal strengths include studies combining molecular genetics and biophysical techniques to examine specialized membrane channels and cell-cell interactions in the morphogenesis and differentiation of neurons. Additional broad areas of interest include the role of neurotrophic factors in neuronal preservation and axon guidance, neurogenesis in the developing nervous system, the regulation of glutamate receptor gene expression, and cellular pathogenesis in genetic models of neuronal diseases. On a systems level., studies include examination of the distribution and sequence of neocortical activation in humans and monkeys and the interactions of functional neuro-imaging and electrophysiologic indices of neural activation. The Department includes broad representation from clinical scientists which foster "translational research" at every level.

Admission Requirements: Bachelor's degree with one-year courses including laboratory work in biology, physics and chemistry. Course such as cell biology and biochemistry are strongly recommended. Admission decision is made after careful consideration of transcripts, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and specific research goals.
