Program Description: The Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, located on the adjacent campuses of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, offers a program of study leading to the Ph.D. in the neurosciences. Program faculty members are drawn from the Departments of Neurology and Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Anatomy, Pharmacology, Physiology and Biophysics, and Psychiatry. The program offers preparation for careers in research and teaching for talented candidates.
Faculty research interests include all aspects of the neurosciences including biological mechanisms involved in neuronal development, pattern formation in the nervous system, synaptic transmission, plasticity and learning, neuronal information processing, motivated behavior, neural response to injury, neuronal disease and cell death, neural specific gene expression, neural regeneration, neurotransmitter receptors, signal tranduction by peptide growth factors, neural specific proteins, molecular mechanisms in neurooncology, control of autonomic nervous system, control of brain blood flow and metabolism, eating disorders, determinants of phenotypic expression in neurons, nerve-muscle interaction, analgesia and pain, visual processing and astrocytic control of cerebral microenvironment. Most of the laboratories employ a multidisciplinary approach to obtain a deeper understanding of the workings of the nervous system at the cellular and molecular levels. Both fundamental and disease-related research are emphasized.
The educational program is flexible and, depending on the needs of the student, includes a core curriculum, advanced electives, seminars and workshops. Laboratory research experiences begin in the first year, and students identify an approved thesis topic by the end of the second year.
The graduate program, in collaboration with faculty members from the Cornell University Medical College, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and The Rockefeller University, also provides research training opportunities that lead to the combined MD/PhD degree. This program prepares exceptional candidates for careers as medical scientists. (Applicants must specifically apply for admission to this program and may elect to join the Graduate Program in Neuroscience).
The Graduate Program in Neuroscience includes faculty located in the Cornell Medical College-New York Hospital complex on 68th/70th Street and York Avenue and also at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, as well as selected faculty members at the Medical College's affiliated research programs at Burke Rehabilitation Center and New York Hospital's Westchester Division Psychiatric Hospital, both located in White Plains, New York.
Admission Requirements: Undergraduate training in biology, organic chemistry, physics, math, GRE scores are required.
