Program Description: The Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy offers graduate training leading to the Ph.D. degree. The goal of this program is to provide students with a solid interdisciplinary academic background and research training with contemporary laboratory techniques in preparation for a combined research and teaching career. The high degree of personal interaction between faculty and students, combined with opportunities throughout the Medical Center, creates an environment conducive to reaching this goal. Graduates from our program have been highly successful in obtaining post-doctoral positions in top laboratories and have gone on to distinguished careers in academics and industry.
Students in the Departmental program take a core of course work selected from Neuroscience, Microscopic Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Gross Anatomy, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology. These courses normally are taken over the first year and a half, along with weekly research seminars and journal clubs. Following completion of the core curriculum, students are encouraged to take additional elective courses, choosing from areas such as neuroscience and molecular biology, as well as from a variety of advanced courses offered in other departments. Thesis research begins in the second year, with completion of the entire program within four years.
The wide range of of research areas in the department include Neurobiology, Cell and Molecular Biology and Developmental Biology. Within these areas, faculty pursue research on topics such as: sensory and sensorimotor integration, naturally-occurring cell death, regeneration and repair of nervous system damage, retinal biology, cellular differentiation and migration, pattern formation, extracellular matrix molecules, heat shock and cytoskeletal proteins, and the pathogenesis and artherosclerosis. Further details of the program and a brochure describing the research interests of individual faculty may be obtained by contacting the director of graduate studies.
Admission Requirements: Applicants should have undergraduate preparation in biology, chemistry (including organic), physics and mathematics, as well as competitive scores on the GRE General Test and an appropriate Subject Test. Completed applications, including official transcripts and three letters of recommendation, should be submitted by February 15 for students to be considered for financial aid.
How, or Where to Apply: Potential applicants can contact Dr. Wallace directly (see listing above), or they can contact the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy Office by telephone at (910) 716-4369 or by fax at (910) 716-4534. Alternatively, they can contact Pearl Lawrence in the Biomedical Graduate Office at 1-800-GETGRAD.
Housing Availability and Costs: Housing is readily available throughout Winston-Salem, and in the residential neighborhoods which surround the Medical Center. One-bedroom apartments typically rent for $400-500/month, and 2-3 bedroom apartments and houses range from $400-700/month.
