Program Description: Graduate studies in Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary offering at Miami University. We offer both the MS and Ph.D.
degrees through the Department of Zoology or the Department of Psychology. The interdepartmental Program offers
comprehensive conceptual and experimental training in molecular, systems and behavioral neuroscience.
A seminar in Neuroscience is offered every semester and provides an opportunity for students in both departments
to interact with other graduate students and with the faculty. The Faculty in Neuroscience engage in research in
cellular, molecular, and developmental neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry,
neuroendocrinology, neuropharmacology and neuroimaging. Special emphasis is placed on preparing students for
a research and teaching career in both academic and industrial settings. All of our graduate students are admitted
with assistantships, usually teaching assistantships and there is full tuition remission as well as an academic and summer
stipend. PhD students have the opportunity to teach a one semester 100 level lecture course during their training.
Research opportunities are numerous and include access to state of the art equipment and techniques such as PCR,
HPLC, TEM, SEM, cryopreservation, intracellular and extracellular electrophysiology, immunotechniques, radiolabelling
assays, cell culture, a staffed electron microscopy facility for bioimaging, including confocal microscopy and a staffed
Center for Bioinformatics that includes multi- and single-capillary automated DNA analyzers, thermocyclers, digital imagers,
and DNA microarray analyzers. Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. Callahan or Dr. Best and arrange a visit to
campus.
