Program Description:  The emphasis of the Neuroscience Program is on a multidisciplinary approach to neuroscience. Faculty from traditional areas such as neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, and others have joined to offer a flexible program with many interdisciplinary opportunities which can be adapted to meet the needs of an individual student. Participating colleges include Biological Sciences, Dentistry, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. In addition, the Center for Molecular Neurobiology provides a major resource for students interested in molecular neuroscience.

The Program is administered by the Neuroscience Graduate Studies Committee. Although the multi-disciplinary core curriculum of thirty-two quarter hours will be the same for all neuroscience graduate students, each student, in conjunction with his/her adviser, will plan a program of study to emphasize one of the areas within neuroscience (e.g. developmental neurobiology, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, psychobiology, or molecular neuroscience).

The curriculum consists of a minimum of 135 hours of credit beyond the bachelor's degree. If a master's degree has been earned by the student, these hours may be applied to the total requirement of 135 and an additional 90 credit hours will be required beyond the master's degree. The Neuroscience Graduate Studies Committee must approve the curriculum planned for each student. There is no foreign language requirement.

Admission Requirements:  Requirements for admission to the graduate program in Neuroscience include a bachelor's or master's degree from a recognized college or university, a grade point average of B (3.0) or better, three letters of recommendation, and the GRE General Test. Additional materials required include transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work and a statement of purpose describing background, research interests and goals. Prior laboratory research experience, while not required, is strongly recommended.
