Program Description: Neuroscience research at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine has undergone extensive development in the past year. As we expand, our vibrant faculty provide graduate students with opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research in the biomedical neuroscience.
The Neuroscience Focus Group is based in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology & Neuroscience at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. As part of the interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program students take a core program of courses emphasizing cell and molecular biology, plus additional coursework in neuroscience. The curriculum is designed to give students an integrated background in neuroscience that includes a strong foundation in cellular and molecular principles. This should allow our students to pursue research projects spanning from molecular neuroscience to behavioral outcomes. Research interests of the faculty include 1) limbic areas of the brain: structure, neurotransmitters& behavior, 2) Anxiety, stress and glucocorticoids, 3) Ion channel mechanisms, 4) Manipulation of gene expression with viral vectors, 5) Cardiovascular homeostasis, 6) Nociception, and 7) Seizures and epilepsy.
