Program Description: The Neuroscience Group at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine offers graduate training leading to the Doctor of Philosophy Degree or the Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences. Students will have the opportunity to receive broad training in anatomy, physiology and behavioral neuroscience. The Neuroscience Group is a multidisciplinary program consisting of faculty within the Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences of the medical school, and of faculty in the Department of Biology. Course work is selected on an individual basis from the medical and graduate school curriculum and includes core courses such as Medical Neuroscience, From Cells to Systems, Human Physiology, Neurophysiology, and Neuroscience Seminar. The Group has a strong focus on systems neuroscience. Research opportunities include: motor control, learning and memory, cellular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity, functional recovery from stroke, neural control of respiration, computational neuroscience and neuroendocrine control of behavior.

- bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university
- satisfactory performance on the GRE and TOEFL (if applicable)
- minimum grade point average of 2.7

This document is not a complete application and it does not replace any part of the required application package. The preliminary assessment may be useful if you would like to have feedback about your likelihood of admission prior to completing the entire application package.
Annual Tuition and Fees: Tuition
and fees for an out-of-state Ph.D. or M.Sc. student who does not receive a
fellowship stipend in 2003-2004 will be approximately $7,500.
Tuition and fees for a South Dakota resident Ph.D. or M.Sc. student without a
stipend will be approximately $4,500.
Approximate Cost of Living Per Year: The cost of living in Vermillion is less than that of several nearby university cities. Excluding tuition and fees, The University of South Dakota calculates that it costs about $8,500 for you to live in Vermillion for one year. Day-Care Facilities Availability and Costs Per Month: Private day-care facilities are available at varying costs.
Stipend/Assistantships and Financial Assistance: Most Ph.D. students receive a fellowship stipend from the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program and qualify for reduced tuition. Assuming the average load of 23 credits per year, tuition and fees for a Ph.D. fellowship recipient in 2003-2004 will be approximately $2,200. Health insurance is available from the University at an additional cost of approximately $600 per year. Purchase of the health insurance is required for international students. The fellowship stipend for first year Ph.D. students is currently $17,000 (US$) for twelve months.
Most M.Sc. students receive a fellowship stipend of $5,700 (US$) for twelve months and also qualify for reduced tuition. Assuming the average load of 23 credits per year, tuition and fees for M.Sc. fellowship recipients in 2003-2004 will be approximately $2,200. Health insurance is available from the University at an additional cost of approximately $600 per year. Purchase of the health insurance is required for international students.
How, if Necessary, to Apply for Financial Assistance: Application for a fellowship is automatic upon admission to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. The primary requirement for recipt of a fellowship is full admission. No additional paperwork is required. It is possible to be admitted to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program without being awarded a fellowship stipend.
