Program Description: The Department of Neuroscience offers students interested in the nervous system a course of study leading to the Ph.D. in Neuroscience or to a combined M.D./ Ph.D. in conjunction with BCM’s medical school. The goal is to provide students with intensive education and training and an opportunity to excel in the laboratory. Graduate students are expected to devote all of their time to research and study, and entering students are encouraged to pursue both research and course work. Students select from graduate level courses and research topics in molecular neurobiology, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neurobiology of disease, systems neuroscience, computational neuroscience, biochemistry and physiology. They also participate in the neuroscience seminar program and student journal clubs. Research rotations in faculty laboratories are expected to lead to the definition of a field of interest and the selection of a thesis research project. Students are admitted to candidacy
upon successful completion of a written and oral qualifying exam, given during the second year of graduate school. Progress in both research and course work is followed closely by the major thesis advisor, a thesis advisory committee, and an overall graduate student advisory committee.
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is located in the Texas Medical Center, a large and vigorous research community that includes eight teaching hospitals and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. It is a private institution dedicated to excellence in research to both graduate and medical education, and is characterized by a high level of interdisciplinary cooperation among all BCM departments.
