Program Description: Students in the Ph.D. Program in Neuroscience at Baylor University are expected to acquire sufficient knowledge and expertise to permit them to work as independent scholars at the frontier of their field upon graduation. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is ultimately awarded to those individuals who have attained a high level of scholarship in a selected field through independent study, research, and creative thought.
The program is designed to concentrate coursework during the first three years of study, leading to the comprehensive exams. Students will complete the forty-four (44) semester hours in the "core" by that time, plus the hours required in a "minor" program of study. Upon successfully passing the comprehensive exams, students are admitted to Ph.D. candidacy, where course demands are minimal.
Admission Requirements:
BA (or equivalent); 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale) in major, 2.75 overall
GRE General (V+Q; subject test not required); 1000 minimum, 1100 recommended
letters of recommendation
personal statements of interest
expressed areas of academic/research interests compatible with those of faculty.
In some cases, students with promise, but with a lack of clear academic success (low GPA or GRE, for example), may be admitted on probationary status.
