Program Description: The Graduate Studies Program is administered by The Institute for Neuroscience, which serves as a campus-wide umbrella organization responsible for the Graduate Program in Neuroscience as well as for research and teaching activities related to the neurosciences. The Program is multidisciplinary with more than 55 participating faculty from 12 departments on campus. The Program is designed to achieve three primary goals:
First, the program provides a broad-based exposure to the various areas of neuroscience.
Second, it offers students the opportunity to pursue research in the area and laboratory of their choice. The research programs available to students encompass the entire spectrum of neuroscience so that any student can find a research program to match his or her particular interest (visit the Research Areas page).
Third, the program provides a supportive environment, so that he or she will be successful in their graduate careers and enjoy themselves during this formative period of their scientific careers. In addition to the regular program, beginning with the Fall 2005 semester, the Institute for Neuroscience graduate program will begin offering an MD/PhD degree in Neuroscience in conjunction with the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Students will undergo medical training at UTMB and then transfer to UT-Austin to complete their graduate work.
Admission Requirements: The requirements of the Graduate School for admission into a Doctor of Philosophy degree program must be met, such as a minimum GPA of 3.0. GRE scores are expected to be a minimum of 1000 total on the verbal and quantitative parts of that exam, although the qualifications of most admitted students exceed the minimum. All applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, usually in biological sciences, chemistry, experimental psychology, kinesiology, pharmacy, zoology, or biomedical engineering. Undergraduate preparation should include one year of chemistry, one year of biology, mathematics through calculus, one semester of cell biology, and one semester of experimental psychology. In some special cases, students lacking these prerequisites may be admitted conditionally to make up any deficiencies after enrollment, however, we receive a very competitive pool of applications, most of which have no deficiencies.
