Program Description:  The interdisciplinary Pre-doctoral Training Program in Neuroscience, sponsored by the Center for Biomedical Neuroscience (CBN) at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. This program integrates existing and emerging strengths in neuroscience research and education at UTHSCSA, representing the collaborative and interactive efforts of 37 training faculty drawn from 4 basic sciences departments and 5 clinical departments. Our program tailors both the didactic and laboratory training of each student to match their individual needs, interests, background and experience. A mentoring committee, comprised of 3 faculty members, advises and assists each student in selecting a course curriculum, selecting research rotations, preparing for qualifying exams, and ultimately, selecting a doctoral dissertation research supervisor in their advanced years of study. Our curriculum includes a small number of required courses, including Fundamentals of Neuroscience, Neuroanatomy, Statistics, Ethics, and Survival Skills. Students then select from among basic courses in at least 2 of 3 major neuroscience tracks: Molecular/Cellular, Systems, and Cognitive/Clinical Neuroscience. A variety of elective and advanced courses in each of these areas rounds out the didactic component of our training. A number of enrichment activities complement the formal course work, including general and specialized journal clubs, departmental seminars, the CBN seminar series and an Annual CBN Retreat. During their first 2 years of study, students are offered the opportunity to conduct 3 research rotations, in the labs of any graduate faculty members of the CBN. A Program Director and Co-Director, together with an Executive Committee, administer the program with external guidance provided by an accomplished Advisory Committee.
