Program Description: Neuroscience is one of the areas of emphasis within the biomedical sciences graduate program at Marshall University School of Medicine. The biomedical sciences graduate program is an interdisciplinary program encompassing the traditional disciplines of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology. The interdisciplinary nature of the program is reflected in course work, journal clubs and seminars.
The goal of the neuroscience curriculum is to provide students with the intellectual knowledge and technical skill to become successful academic or industrial neuroscientists. The curriculum is flexible and is customized to meet the needs of individual students. All students receive a broad-based interdisciplinary introduction to neuroscience. This may include, depending upon the student's objectives, anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology as well as neuroscience. Following this, the student specializes and pursues a selected topic for research.
Research strengths of the faculty lie in the areas of neuroendocrinology, comparative neuroanatomy, cellular neurophysiology, neuromuscular development, sleep physiology, molecular neuropharmacology, visual development and mechanoreceptor control of posture. The neuroscience laboratories provide students with excellent facilities and state-of-the-art equipment for research.
Marshall University was established as Marshall Academy in 1837 and was granted university status in 1961. The Marshall University School of Medicine was established in 1978. Most of the activities of the biomedical sciences program are located in the Medical Education Building adjacent to the Huntington Veterans Administration Hospital.
