Program Description:

The program initiated in 1974 draws on the resources of the Faculty of Medicine (primarily), the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.  In addition to coordinating the teaching curriculum for graduate students in the program, the research topics pursued include the following:

  1. Initially, studies focused on somatosensory pathways using anatomical, physiological and pharmacological approaches.
  2. During the eighties, studies concentrated on nociceptive pathways and pain related behavior and on inputs and outputs of the dorsal column nuclei including their role in the transmission and modulation of nociceptive information.
  3. During the nineties, research became concerned with various aspects of inflammatory pain, interactions between the endocrine, immune and neural systems and the role of cytokines in these interactions.
  4. Very recently, in addition to on-going research on various aspects of the above subjects, studies are also pursued on spinal and supraspinal control of neuropathic behavior, neural control of intestinal absorption and water movements, trophic role of the neural innervation of teeth and the mediation of neurogenic inflammation in cultured dorsal root ganglia.
