Program Description:  The Neuroscience and Behavior Program at Wesleyan permits undergraduates to get broad course work and research training in the interdisciplinary field of contemporary neuroscience. There are nine principle neuroscience faculty in the Program in the Departments of Biology and Psychology The Neuroscience and Behavior (NS&B) major is strongly based in the biological sciences, and the foundation courses of the major include two introductory courses in biology and at least one year each of chemistry and physics. Beyond this all students take a core Neurobiology and Behavior course and five or more additional elective courses taught by the NS&B faculty. A distribution requirement ensures that all majors take neuroscience courses with faculty of both Psychology and Biology Departments. Available courses run from molecular neurobiology through cellular and systems neurophysiology and neuroethology to the neural basis of human perception, language and memory. Majors are encouraged to become actively involved in research of the faculty, and many students join lab groups with graduate students and postdocs and co-author original research publications. The research interests of the faculty are: invertebrate neural pattern generation, sensory processing in electroreceptive fishes, mammalian visual cortex development, plasticity of neural centers controlling bird song, neural initiation of locomotion in mammals, language development and hemispheric specialization, visual perception, memory in humans, and modeling of neural systems.

Admission Requirements:  SAT verbal/math and three achievement tests (including English composition with or without essay) or ACT scores.
