Program Description: A major in psychobiology leading to the BS is offered jointly through the Departments of Psychology and Biology. This rigorous major is designed for students preparing for health-related professional schools or graduate study in such fields as biology, neurobiology, behavioral ecology, ethology, psychology, psychobiology, neuroscience, and behavioral medicine. The program requires a minimum of 130 credits. A student must have a minor in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Microbiology and Immunology or Physics. Admission is open to freshmen with SAT scores of 1200 or above and GPA of 3.3 or higher. Advanced students may be admitted on an individual basis after completion of 24 credit hours at the University of Miami. Details are available from either the Program Director in Biology or Psychology.
Course-work for the major includes a core of required courses in both Biology and Psychology plus a choice of electives (3 in biology, one in Psychology) from a variety of neuroscience and behavior related courses in each department's offerings. Psychobiology majors also take the science and mathematics courses required by most professional and post-graduate programs: two semesters of calculus, physics and organic chemistry. Opportunities for research projects in a number of faculty laboratories exist; many Psychobiology majors also qualify for an Honor's thesis. Fifty-four students were enrolled inthe program in Spring of 1997.
