Program Description: Neuroscience seeks to understand the brain and behavior at the level of individual nerve cells and their interactions, or at the molecular level. The neuroscience major is designed to provide an introduction to these basic areas of investigation by emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. The major prepares undergraduates to pursue advanced studies in neuroscience, medicine, or psychology, or a career in the pharmaceutical, medical or biotechnology industries.
To complete a B.S. in neuroscience, students must complete at least 120 credits, including at least 89 credits in the major. Requirements include core courses in biology and neuroscience, and electives in the major. Students are required to complete at least 2 credits of independent research or study with a faculty mentor. Additional courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics are also required.
Admission Requirements:
Freshman:
1. Have completed or are completing the following:
- four years of high school mathematics with one year each of elementary and intermediate algebra and geometry (trigonometry, precalculus or calculus in the fourth year are strongly recommended.)
- three years of high school science, including one year each of biology, chemistry and physics.
- other high school preparation requirements specific to the University of Minnesota (four years of English, two years of a single second language and three years of social studies, including US history and geography).

Students with any post-high school college level work:
1. Grades of at least C- in the following:
- one semester or two quarters of college-level calculus
- one semester or two quarters of inorganic chemistry
- one semester or one quarter of biology
