Program Description:  The comprehensive major in Psychobiology offered at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is administered by the Psychology Department. The program is designed for health science majors (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, preoccupational therapy, pre-physical therapy, etc.) as well as those planning graduate work in Neuroscience, Neuropsychology, or Clinical Psychology. The program offers training in physics, chemistry, anatomy, cell biology, physiology, and behavioral studies. The major provides great flexibility in course selection to meet the varied demands of professional school admission requirements. Extensive laboratory and field experiences are available as are many research opportunities in neuroscience, biology, and behavioral studies. The program has received $50,000 from NSF for an Advanced Neuroscience Learning Laboratory and a graduate program in Experimental Psychology should be available in 1998. Laboratory facilities include a multi-species animal colony of rats, inbred mice and frogs. Facilities are available for surgery, physiological monitoring (animals and human), microscopy, tissue preparation, gel electrophoresis, DNA studies, pharmacologic studies, culture and behavioral work. UNK has good working relationships with local health care facilities, administers its own speech and hearing clinic, and provides funds for travel to local and regional scientific meetings. UNK is a member of the Council for Undergraduate Research.
