Program Description:  Neuroscience is one of the concentrations offered through the University's Program in Biology and Medicine. The UPBM also offers B.S. concentrations in Biochemistry, Cell & Developmental Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Genetics. All students in biological science concentrations take a core of introductory biology courses and genetics or biochemistry; neuroscience students take three required neuroscience courses and three neuroscience electives along with two biological diversity courses and courses in chemistry, calculus, physics and statistics. An introductory course in neurobiology with associated laboratory presents elements of the anatomical, biochemical, and physiological aspects of brain function; an advanced laboratory course provides hands-on experience in these areas. Upper level elective courses examine neural development, sensory systems, neurochemistry, neuroethology and neurobiology of behavior. Students are encouraged to do independent research projects in the laboratories of the more than 50 participating neuroscience researchers on the River Campus and at the Medical Center. Successful defense of a thesis based on this work earns the student a degree with distinction in research. A majority of graduates of the program continue on with further study in professional or graduate schools, while others go immediately into employment in a variety of fields.

Admission Requirements: Because grades and test scores are not the only indicators of potential and because secondary schools vary in courses offered, students are evaluated in terms of individual accomplishments. Applicants are expected to have had sound, basic preparation in several disciplines: four years of English with continuous writing experience, four years of social studies, two years of foreign language, four years of mathematics, two or more years of laboratory science, B.S. degree programs in the biological sciences expect students to have had high school chemistry, personal essay, official high school transcript, recommendation from counselor or faculty advisor, and SAT or ACT report.
