Program Description: The Neuroscience Program is an independent, interdisciplinary program at Oberlin College. Oberlin College was one of the first undergraduate institutions to recognize the importance of this growing field and graduated its first majors in 1972. Recently the Program was recognized as one of the best in the country when it received a "Program that Works" award from Project Kaleidoscope, a National Science Foundation support group interested in the improvement and reform of science education.
The Neuroscience Program offers two majors: a major in Neuroscience which emphasizes molecular, cellular and systems approaches to understanding brain function and a major in Biopsychology which emphasizes the neural underpinnings of animal behavior, especially human behavior. The Program has significant student support, as the Neuroscience Program is the sixth largest department/program of the college in terms of the number of graduating majors. Three Oberlin College alumni have been presidents of the Society for Neuroscience during the Decade of the Brain.
In developing its curriculum, the Neuroscience Program has attempted to develop course offerings that are rigorous, diverse and timely. The Program's view is that laboratory and independent research experiences are critical features of the learning experience in science. Accordingly, we offer numerous laboratory and research opportunities to our students that involve them in problems, methodologies, and technical approaches that are representative of current research in neuroscience. Students are exposed to research in laboratory courses, in the Honors in Neuroscience Program, and through many opportunities made available to students to work directly with faculty on their research. Such research occurs during the academic year, during the month-long Winter Term and during the summer via college-supported research awards.
