Program Description: The undergraduate neuroscience major at the University of Pittsburgh is housed in the Department of Neuroscience in the School of Arts and Sciences. Students receive a Bachelor of Science degree upon successful completion of the requirements of this major. There are three interrelated goals of our program.
1. To provide a high-quality undergraduate major to students interested in the neural sciences.
2. To provide an educational experience that maximizes the chances of students successfully pursuing career goals in the health sciences or in research.
3. To provide the opportunity for neuroscience majors to participate in laboratory research and to complete an experimental thesis as part of their undergraduate education.
The undergraduate neuroscience major is designed to provide a broad and challenging sequence of courses in biological sciences, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, in addition to introductory and advanced courses in neuroscience. More specifically, neuroscience majors are required to take a series of four one-semester courses in the discipline (Introduction to Neuroscience, Functional Neuroanatomy, Synaptic Neurotransmission, and Neurophysiology) in addition to many associated science courses plus two elective courses in neuroscience that they select from a large group available. Students also can receive course credit for original research projects they conduct in collaboration with department faculty. The small size of the upper-level courses and the opportunity to work closely with individual faculty members in their research laboratories permit closer relationships between students and faculty than usually are found in the larger departments on campus.
