Program Description: The Neuroscience major at Westminster is a component of the college's liberal arts program. Westminster College is a community of learning, small enough to encourage the exchange of different ideas and philosophies while yet large enough to provide diversity of knowledge, experiences, and values. Its residential atmosphere enhances personal interaction.
The Neuroscience program is coordinated by the Psychology and Biology departments. The psychology component of the curriculum includes courses in experimental design, learning, cognition, neural networks and behavioral neuroscience. The biology component includes courses in genetics, physiology and developmental biology. Depending upon a student's interest, additional courses in chemistry and computer science are incorporated into the major. The program includes a student initiated independent research project in which students work closely with faculty on a problem of common interest. Students who complete exceptional projects are encouraged to present their work at professional conferences.
Both the Psychology and Biology departments are housed in the modern Hoyt Science Resources Center which also houses the Mack Science Library. All facilities in the center are networked through an ether-net with a fiber optic backbone with connections to the residence halls. The Biology department operates eight teaching laboratories, electron microscopes and an outdoor environmental facility. The Psychology department operates a behavioral neuroscience laboratory, its own computer laboratory and a child development laboratory (a pre-school).
Neuroscience graduates have pursued advanced degrees in medicine and allied medical fields as well as PhD programs in a variety of research areas.
