Program Description: The Department of Neuroscience offers an undergraduate concentration in the fields of knowledge important to an understanding of brain function. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary program bringing together neurobiology (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, development) with elements of psychology and cognitive science, as well as mathematical and physical principles involved in modeling neural systems. The concentration requires a general science background a number of courses especially devoted to the brain sciences, and an in-depth experience that clearly defines the limits of knowledge in at least one aspect of neuroscience. The concentration allows considerable flexibility for students to develop the last two years along lines of individual preference. They may focus on areas of cellular and molecular neuroscience or some combination of these. Independent study and honors projects are encouraged, and there are considerable opportunities for students to conduct neuroscience research.
